How We Met

Eric and Laura interned together in 2007 but didn't meet until there was a free meal. Eric and Laura never miss free meals.

New York rained too enthusiastically on free lunch day, so Eric tried the subway, which was completely flooded, and the bus, which was too full, before walking six miles to work in the rain.

Laura overslept. Her train was fine.

At lunch, Eric mentioned that he was going to make cookies for his group as an end-of-summer thank you. Laura told him no one likes cookies, but everyone likes cupcakes, so he should probably make cupcakes.*

That night Eric made cookies for his group and started making cupcakes (for a certain charming person) when, at 5 in the morning, he ran out of sugar.

Rather than give up, he went to the nearest 24 hour McDonald's and stole all of the sugar packets when the cashier's back was turned. He made cupcakes with sugar from dozens and dozens of sugar packets.

The next morning he brought Laura cupcakes at her desk. She said thank you and decided to figure out what his name was.

*Dessert remains an ideological sticking point for the couple. They hope to one day overcome this very serious deal breaker.

The Proposal

Eric and Laura went to the diner on a Sunday morning in...March? April? No one is really sure. Laura asked Eric if he thought getting married in October was a good idea. He said ok.

Then they had pancakes.
